The Rubber Merchants

Romantic Comedy with Songs

Yohanan Tzingerbei, an ageing bachelor in need of love, walks into Bella Barlo’s pharmacy to buy condoms. Bella, an ageing singleton herself and equally in need of love, is behind the counter.
Across the counter, they share a rare moment of intimacy.
Romance is interrupted by the arrival of Shmuel Sprol, another bachelor – and a condom merchant determined to unload his stock – who offers Yohanan an attractive deal.
Yohanan finds himself torn between Bella’s offer of love and Shmuel’s offer of a discount. He chooses love.
But just as love seems within reach, doubt and suspicion get the better of Yohanan and Bella.
The negotiations continue, love is postponed, and hearts are broken. In a sharp, funny and painful satire, Hanoch Levin lays bare the petty commerce that governs human relations: the fears, pride and petty scorekeeping that turn love into yet another transaction no one quite dares to close.
